Lucas is studying arctic and boreal carbon cycles using emergent satellite technology under Dr. John Kimball. He grew up in the small town of Stevensville, Montana. He has attended both Montana Universities and worked across the West and Alaska in summer research and natural resources management positions before becoming a graduate student at the University of Montana in 2005. He now does research with the Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group during the school year on the Missoula campus, and spends summers at the Flathead Biological Station with occasional field forays with Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) collaborators to study sites in Alaska. His employment, educational background, and experience reflect an array of interdisciplinary interests, all of which are focused on the study of plant life, energy, and natural systems.

Professional Experience and Education

Research Interests

Terrestrial ecosystem ecology:
  • Carbon, Water, and Energy Cycles
  • Biophysical meteorology and climatology
  • Arctic Regions

Remote Sensing and technology:

  • Microwave Radiometry and Synthetic Aperture Radar
  • Optical Remote Sensing
  • Computer Modeling and Data Assimilation

Current Research

  • Development of passive microwave algorithms for retrieval of soil moisture and temperature from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer EOS (AMSR-E) on Aqua across diverse high-latitude land cover types.
  • Development of a remote sensing method for monitoring the high-latitude carbon balance using products derived from the AMSR-E and MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrophotometer (MODIS) sensors.
