Mission

Our mission is to advance scientific understanding of water and the life that depends on it. From the shores of Flathead Lake and within the University of Montana, our dedicated team works locally and globally, creating and sharing knowledge with students, researchers, decision-makers, and our community.

Vision

We aim to be global leaders in the fields of aquatic research and education – inspiring curiosity, deepening understanding of the waters and watersheds around us, and empowering current and future generations to responsibly steward the lakes, rivers, and oceans of the world.

Legacy - We are the second oldest biological field station in the US and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. We have one of the oldest, contiguous lake datasets in the world.

Research - We work on a watershed fed by Glacier National Park and other pristine wilderness areas, allowing our research to focus on both natural processes and human-induced effects.

Education - We offer premier field-based summer ecology courses and graduate level studies in ecology and limnology. Our students come from across the United States and around the world. We also offer watershed-based onsite field trips for K-12 students.

Monitoring - FLBS has been known as the “Sentinel of the Lake” since 1899. Our ongoing watershed monitoring - supported by invasive species and water quality grants - delivers the science that guides decisions to protect Flathead Lake and waters across Montana.

Outreach - We feel strongly that science should be disseminated to the greatest number of people, including the local citizenry and the worldwide community. We offer community presentations, expert seminars, and interactive field-based classrooms.
