My research focuses on the early detection, prevention, and management of aquatic invasive species using environmental DNA (eDNA), genomics, and data-driven modeling. I manage the Montana Conservation Genomics Lab, where I develop and apply genomic methods to improve the sensitivity of invasive species detection, expand the early detection window, and support conservation and management decisions.

The laboratory provides high-throughput eDNA testing for local, state, and federal agencies, processing an average of 400 environmental samples annually. Our work supports monitoring for aquatic invasive species—including zebra and quagga mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil, curlyleaf pondweed, and mystery snails—as well as fisheries and conservation programs targeting species such as walleye, non-native trout, and the threatened native bull trout.

My research also integrates qPCR assay development, metabarcoding bioinformatics, machine learning, ecological simulations, and big data on environmental characteristics to better understand invasion risk and inform strategic monitoring and management plans. By combining molecular tools with predictive modelling, I aim to provide resource managers with practical, science-based approaches for preventing the spread of invasive species and protecting aquatic ecosystems.
