Mission & Vision
Mission
Our mission is to advance scientific understanding of water and the life that depends on it. From the shores of Flathead Lake and within the University of Montana, our dedicated team works locally and globally, creating and sharing knowledge with students, researchers, decision-makers, and our community.

Vision
We aim to be global leaders in the fields of aquatic research and education – inspiring curiosity, deepening understanding of the waters and watersheds around us, and empowering current and future generations to responsibly steward the lakes, rivers, and oceans of the world.

Values
Collaboration: We believe our work is stronger when we work together. We commit to collaboration across teams within FLBS, with colleagues and partners outside the Bio Station, with the local community, and with the broader scientific world.
Consistency: For over 125 years, the Bio Station’s staff have lived and worked in the Flathead watershed – creating a legacy of continuity and excellence of which we are proud. We commit to supporting our team so they can continue this legacy, ensuring long-term scientific insight and deepening our relationship with our community.
Curiosity and Education: Curiosity is the foundation of our work. We embrace new ideas, collaborations, and innovation. We commit to inspiring curiosity in others by enthusiastically sharing our knowledge, in the belief that education deepens appreciation for the natural world and informs stewardship.
Integrity and Transparency: We strive to be a trusted source of information for our local and global communities. We commit to upholding honesty and openness in our work and to serving as a science-based resource for reliable information about the Flathead watershed and other aquatic systems.
