About the Flathead Lake 'Keep It Blue' License Plate

Buying Flathead Lake Keep It Blue plates, sponsored by the Flathead Lake Protection Association, is an easy and convenient way to make small incremental donations towards the endowment fund and annual costs of monitoring. And you get something special too—the plates send a great message to residents and visitors alike.

We at the Flathead Lake Biological Station thank each and every license plate holder for buying the plate and renewing each year. Please encourage others to buy the plates to support lake monitoring in this simple no fuss method of contribution.

The Flathead Lake Keep It Blue license plate was a long time in coming. The idea for the plate was first discussed by Bonnie Ellis and Ric Hauer when finding ways of spreading the message that Flathead Lake is a valuable resource worth protecting.

Bruce Young, of the Flathead Protection Association (FLPA)external site image, was the most enthusiastic driver behind the project and helped get the idea off the ground.

Well-known Whitefish artist Glen Prestegaard donated his rendition of Flathead Lake as viewed from Polson Bay for use as the background on the plates.

Improving the Monitoring Effort

Thank you to all Keep It Blue license plate holders for supporting Flathead Lake water quality monitoring. Just having Keep It Blue plates sends a great message to residents and visitors alike: you take Flathead Lake and the water quality in your community seriously.

Your Contributions Are Growing
Proceeds over the past 3 years from the Flathead Lake Protection Association grassroots "Keep It Blue" license plate proceeds has contributed more than $43,000 towards the endowment and annual costs of monitoring.

As part of the monitoring program, Dr. Bonnie Ellis and colleagues have described long-term trends in water quality that are coherent with the expanding population and changing land uses in the Flathead Basin. These studies now provide a basis for minimizing pollution and maintaining the clear, clean water that people associate with the Keep It Blue plate. Continuing the monitoring program is essential to track changes in water quality and to stimulate proper management responses.

We at Flathead Lake Biological Station are reliant on your continued support to maintain the monitoring efforts that have allowed Flathead Lake to remain one of the most pristine large lakes in the world. Your private sector donations and grass roots fundraising, like the Keep It Blue license plate proceeds, help to continue the necessary level of sampling to assess trends in water quality not only in Flathead Lake but in many basin tributaries.

Flathead Lake is undoubtedly one of the great jewels of the world and we want to keep it that way!
